Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Plasma is that liquid part of the blood made mainly of water and protein. Red blood cells, white blood cells as well as platelets are suspended in plasma as they travel through your bloodstream. Platelets are fragments of a type of blood cell made in the bone marrow that allows your blood to clot. They are also very important in healing.

How Does PRP Work?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections can be used for various musculoskeletal injuries and pain syndrome as well as for the rejuvenation of skin and hair. To collect PRP, blood is drawn from a vein and a machine is then used to separate the PRP from the remainder of the blood. The area of the body being treated with PRP will then be anesthetized. Once the superficial skin is numb, a needle will be used to inject the PRP into that area of the body being treated.

PRP injections usually take about 30 minutes. Once PRP is injected into the area being treated, the platelets break down and release various growth factors, which assist cells in repair and regeneration. These growth factors are thought to be what triggers the healing process. PRP injections can be used to treat injured joints, ligaments, and tendons. They also can be used for various cosmetic procedures. For example, PRP injections can be used to treat androgenic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness) as well as for facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Varveris begins by drawing a small amount of your blood and then processing it in a special centrifuge. This provides a plasma concentrate containing a higher than normal number of platelets, which is referred to as platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. While the PRP is being processed, your skin will be cleansed and prepared for treatment. Dr. Varveris will then inject the PRP into the necessary facial areas. After a series of three treatments done at bi-weekly to monthly intervals, Dr. Varveris recommends repeating PRP every six to nine months, with each treatment tending to give better and longer-lasting results than the previous one.

Platelets are those blood cells responsible for tissue healing and the growth of new cells. When PRP is injected, it stimulates the production of natural collagen. This will regenerate your facial tissues and act to naturally smoothen and tighten your skin, softening wrinkles, and creating a more youthful facial appearance.
